What is human trafficking?

Last Updated: Sep 22, 2014 04:16PM CDT
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings by means of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor.

Human trafficking is often misunderstood when we come across stories of survivors.  This is due to the fact that survivors will often indicate that they went willingly, or sent their children willingly, because they had a contract for a job or school.

Some survivors may have even gone deeply into debt so that they could pay handlers, traffickers, or “conductors” to take themselves or their children away from their homes and to a new destination on the promise of school or work. Looking deeper into the situations of those held captive around the world shows that human trafficking thrives on and flourishes through deception.
